Privacy Policy

Comuna helps you find events and places near you in Los Angeles. Comuna is run by Corrie Pickering ("we", "us"), as an individual, until we form a company. This policy explains what information the Comuna app and website collect, why, and the choices you have. We wrote it to be read, so it's short.

What we collect

Information you give us

  • Your name and email address, if you create an account. We email you a sign-in code instead of using a password. Other users never see your email. On the monthly leaderboard you appear by your first name and last initial, or by a nickname you choose in the app; you can also hide from it.
  • Your neighborhood and interests, which you pick when you start using the app.
  • Feedback, reviews and messages you send us in the app or through forms on this website, including anything you write.
  • Host applications, including your business name, contact details and information about your events.
  • Events you submit for the map, and events you report.

Information from using Comuna

  • A random ID for your device. You can look around without an account, and this ID lets us keep your progress until you make one.
  • Activity, such as events you view, search for, save, RSVP to, share or get directions to, and the points, stamps and badges you earn.
  • Location. If you allow it, we use your device's location to recommend events near you and to confirm check-ins. We save it rounded to about half a mile, never your exact location. When you check in, we store how far you were from the event, not where you were. We don't track your location in the background.
  • Technical information like your device type, browser and IP address, which our service providers receive when your device connects to them.

How we use it

  • To run Comuna: recommend events near you, pick your daily Top 4, keep your passport, and verify check-ins.
  • To show hosts totals for their events, such as views and verified check-ins. We never give hosts your name or email.
  • To reply to your messages and host applications.
  • To improve Comuna, fix bugs and prevent abuse.

We don't sell your personal information, and we don't use it for advertising.

Who we share it with

We use a small number of service providers to run Comuna. They process information only on our behalf:

  • Supabase: our database, accounts and sign-in emails.
  • Mapbox: maps. Mapbox receives your IP address and the map area you're viewing.
  • Google: fonts on our app and website. Google receives your IP address when the fonts load.
  • GitHub Pages: hosts the app and this website.

We may also share information if required by law, or to protect the safety of our users or the public.

How long we keep it

We keep your account information while your account is active. When you delete your account, we immediately delete your sign-in, profile, points, check-ins, plans, viewing and search history, and events you submitted that weren't approved. Approved events you shared stay listed, and feedback you sent stays, without your name. If you never make an account, the activity linked to your device's random ID is kept to understand how Comuna is used, without your name.

Your choices

  • Location: you can turn location access off at any time in your device settings. Comuna still works; you'll just pick your neighborhood by hand.
  • Delete your account any time in the app under Profile > Delete account.
  • Access, correction and deletion: you can ask for a copy of your information, or ask us to correct or delete it, by emailing corrie@wearecomuna.com.
  • California residents have the right to know, delete and correct personal information, and not to be discriminated against for using these rights. Email us to make a request.

Children

Comuna isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we'll delete it.

Security

We use access controls and encryption in transit to protect your information. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to keep your data safe.

Changes

If we make meaningful changes, we'll update this page and the date above, and let you know in the app when it matters. If Comuna moves to a company we form, this policy will name it.
